*Health tip information*
Most cinnamon sold in the United States is the cassia variety. It is a
lower quality and cheaper type commonly used. Cassia cinnamon has high
levels of coumarin, a natural plant chemical that acts as a blood thinner. Coumarin has also been shown to be toxic to the liver and kidneys, and it
may also be carcinogenic.
Ceylon cinnamon - “true cinnamon,” has a sweeter, more delicate flavor.
It contains antioxidant compounds called proanthocyanadins, similar to the antioxidant compounds found in green tea and grapes.
In Ceylon cinnamon, the cinnamon bark oils contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects.
Ceylon cinnamon contains hardly any coumarin.
A 2012 review article published in "Diabetic Medicine" examined 16 studies of Ceylon cinnamon specifically. The researchers uncovered beneficial effects on diabetic complications, with no toxicity to the liver and kidneys.
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has recommended that for
frequent consumption of cinnamon, you should choose Ceylon cinnamon.
